2013 and all things new

You know what I love about the new year? New bloggers. New people committing to this being in the year to become healthy.

A very good friend of mine posted something on facebook the other day, and it made me really angry (not what she said, but the idea of it, I'm in complete agreement with her). She was posting about how she really didn't like the negativity associated with "January Joiners" - aka the people who make resolutions to get healthy and join gyms, classes, etc. To many regulars, they resent these "January Joiners" who they feel are taking up space and invading their routines. Guys, if any of you have ever had any of these thoughts, I urge you to look at from this perspective - WE ALL have to start somewhere. If it takes a New Years resolution to get someone moving, so be it! Applaud them for their effort to change something about themselves. Support them in their endeavor. In my opinion, it is NEVER a bad time to change your life, and we should not scold people or look down on them for starting with a new year. It's a clean slate, a chance to start over, and I welcome them into this crazy journey.

Also, on the topic of new bloggers, I feel it is appropriate and necessary to give a shout out to Chris....I have just discovered his blog and it's brilliant, hilarious, and refreshing. Check it out here

  1. January Joiners -- there is something I appreciate about those people. They are taking charge of their life. I wish them the best and hope they stick to their guns. They also remind me that I can start again too.

    Rock on, newbies!

  2. I totally understand the compassion for "Resolutioners." Just because they chose January 1 and I chose July 31 doesn't make their journey less important or less likely to succeed. We all had a Day 1 once! Being supportive is the best thing we can do for a gym newbie.

  3. Hahaha, me? You know what made me post the fact that a trainer at my first gym (she trained me a few times) posted the fact that she hated that the "Jan Joiners" were taking up all the equipment at the gym. She is STILL a personal trainer and she lost 50 pounds with the help of a trainer and has kept it off. She of all people should be championing newbies.

For me personally my journey is getting rebooted, I haven't pushed myself since I crossed that finish line in October, no excuses 2013!

  4. Totally guilty. And was totally a "January Joiner" today as I re joined the gym since we moved, and went to workout for the 1st time in 3 months.

  6. I have no problems with people new to the cause. They are worth just as much as me, regardless! :)

  7. I don't go to the gym so they don't bother me. I wish them luck :).

  8. Hi, I just found your blog and I am a new follower :)

I totally agree with what you've posted. Why not start in January? It would be nice if everyone could just support one another and hopefully more "january joiners" would stick to it longer.

  9. I had never heard that term before but I do remember last January when it was "standing room only" at my usually quiet Weight Watchers meeting. I am not such a "new" blogger but am trying to be more consistent
